A bikini wax can keep you smooth for weeks, and a few small habits before and after your visit make it a lot more comfortable. These are the bikini wax dos and don’ts we go over with clients at our Mission Valley studio, especially first timers.
Before your appointment, let the hair grow to about a quarter inch, roughly the size of a grain of rice. Wax grips that length best. That means no shaving in between, since short stubble is hard to remove cleanly. A day or two ahead, exfoliate gently. On the day itself, shower and wash the area, then skip the lotion. Oils keep wax from gripping the hair evenly.
Planning a beach day? Do it after, not before. Sunburned skin is far more sensitive, so we’d ask you not to tan in the days before you come in. Wear loose, soft clothes to the appointment too, because tight leggings aren’t kind to freshly waxed skin.
Please tell us about any medications. Retinoids and isotretinoin can make skin more fragile, and waxing may need to wait. It’s a quick conversation that protects your skin.
After the wax, loose cotton underwear is your friend. Keep the area clean, and start gentle exfoliation after 3 or 4 days to help prevent ingrown hairs. For about a day, stay out of hot tubs and saunas, and hold off on heavy workouts. If small bumps or an ingrown hair show up, don’t pick at them.
Have sensitive skin? Some of our clients prefer sugaring, which uses a paste made mostly of sugar, lemon and water. We’re happy to talk through which option fits you better.
Follow these bikini wax dos and don’ts, and your skin has a much better chance of staying calm while your results last longer.
